Website SEO (or search engine optimization) may not be the prettiest thing to talk about BUT it is an important part of any web design project. So, today I’m sharing some simple SEO tips to help get you found online.
Why is SEO so important? Well, search engine optimization will help you rank for important keywords in your industry, ultimately helping your customers find you! So, to help you get more leads for your business, here are 4 simple SEO tips you can apply today.
SEO Tip #1 – Boost your Relevance
Did you know that occasionally refreshing your home page content will help boost your rankings? Search engines are designed to show people relevant content. That’s their job! So, the more recent your content, the more likely it will be relevant to a search. Therefore, the more likely you will rank higher in search results.
Called the “google caffeine” update of 2011, keeping your site fresh will boost your SEO relevance. Obviously, freshly pressed coffee is so much better than that cup you reheated from hours ago!
SEO Tip #2 – Build your Authority
Have you ever thought about linking to sites that are already ranking well for your keywords? This SEO tip may be counterintuitive but creating these links tell search engines you are associated with already trusted, relevant and helpful content.
How could you implement this on a home page? Well, a comparison chart showing how you stack up against others in your industry may convince customers to go with you. Plus, being transparent about your offerings builds trust with your customers too.

SEO Tip #3 – Don’t give Mixed Messages
The headings and subheadings on your website are tagged with labels h1, h2, h3 and so on. Make sure your keyword is in your h1 tag. It’s also imperative that there is only one h1 on any given web page.
Search engines read your site hierarchy based on these tags so it’s important to let them know what the page is about. Using more than one h1 tag sends mixed messages… and yes even Google gets confused by mixed messaging!
SEO Tip #4 – Optimize those Image Files
The last tip on the list! Make sure to optimize your image files before uploading them to your website. When you upload an image, the file name and other fields such as “alt text” tell search engines (and visually-impaired users) what the image is about.
Don’t stuff these fields with lots of keywords! Use a key phrase that accurately describes your picture & everyone will be happy! Google, your users and you for the extra traffic boost.
