I’ve been using Later, the Instagram scheduler since I first launched my business in May of 2018. For those of you not familiar with the app, it’s a marketing platform that allows you to schedule all your Instagram content in advance. Since I have been using it consistently for the past year, I thought it was time for a product review.
Later is a social media scheduling app. First developed for Instagram, you can also use it for Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
It allows me to schedule a month of Instagram content in an afternoon, so I can spend more time focusing on all the other things in my business.
I find the free version of Later is perfect for my business needs. Every month I set aside a 4 to 6-hour block of time to schedule my Instagram content.
First, I gather my images and upload them into the Later app. Next, I drag the images onto the weekly scheduler accounting for things such as:
Next, I check the feed preview to see how it all looks from my profile page. I’ll adjust as needed here making sure colours are balanced and pictures of me are showing up frequently enough.
Then, with my feed balanced, I start composing my post captions and adding my hashtag groupings.
A few things I always try to do with every post:
TIP! Use the Saved Captions feature to save all your hashtags in groups based on the content you share. I have hashtag groups for small business branding, web design, Showit website templates, social media and more! I even have a saved caption with all the emoji’s I use frequently and with my photographer’s account info for quick tags.
I really do love this Instagram scheduler app. Here are just a few reasons why I’m a happy and loyal customer:

Later, the marketing platform for Instagram.
I’ve recently been using the free version of Later. At first I loved it but I realized recently that the thumbnails I see on Instagram are very degraded compared to the thumbnails I see if I upload the same jpg directly to Instagram without using Later. I’m using the best quality jpgs that Later allows (the jpg must be less than 5 mb). The result is that if someone looks at my profile page they see blurry thumbnails for posts that Later automatically posted. Have you found that? (And if so, have you found a fix?)
Hi Anna, I honestly haven’t experienced that as long as I’m using good quality photos which it sounds like you’re already doing!
Have you had a look at this article on the Later website: https://docs.later.com/en/articles/1499818-what-is-the-best-image-format
They have a few more tips to maximize image quality.
Thanks for replying! The mystery continues. I’m going to run some test posts based on that article. I’ve got an email into Later as well. Thanks again for answering!
I have the business plan, I think. Whatever the $90 one is. I am contemplating upgrading to get hashtag suggestions. Do you have any experience with this feature?
I haven’t used their hashtag suggestion feature – typically I do my own research and then revisit it every 3-4 months or so. Generally, my hashtags are a combination of a few branded hashtags (vbcreative, vbclient), a couple of location-specific ones (vancouverwebdesigner, surreywebdesign), a few related to the service I provide (web design, web designer, branding, etc.) and then the remainder are ones that I notice my target audience is either using or might use when trying to search for me. If you do decide to give it a try, I’d be curious to hear what you think of the feature!
Thank you for this blog, Vanessa. You’ve persuaded me to start with the free version. Gratefully appreciated. Hope all is well – this is great and super useful content. Thank you.
Great! I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do!
