In 2019, I started the tradition of picking a word of the year for myself. At the time, I was eight months into my business and feeling very much like a newbie entrepreneur. Leads were few and far between. Projects I did book were sporadic and life felt very unsettled.
Reflecting on My 2019 Word of the Year, Progress
For 2019, my word of the year was progress. Defined as a forward or onward movement toward a destination, I choose it because I’m usually a perfectionist. The word progress was my reminder that nothing has to be 100% perfect. It grounded me and reminded me to just keep striving forward which is exactly what I did!
I knew I wanted to be able to look back on 2019 and say confidently that I made progress on my business goals every day. I set out to end the year feeling established – not arrived, not complete, not finished but established. Surprisingly, by August, I was feeling exactly this and shared about it on my Instagram feed.
Looking Forward to a Harmonious New Year
While I made lots of progress in 2019, life was still rather chaotic. All that focus on the business meant home life got a little disorganized. I had never really set much of a routine working from home and I started to feel the need for more boundaries and order.
Even within my business, I’m craving systems. Where 2019 was about getting established, 2020 needs to be about setting up systems and routines so that I don’t burn out and things run a little more smoothly.
And so, my word for the new year is harmony. Defined as the quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole, I’ll be looking to bring more order to my home and work life. One shouldn’t have to suffer for the other one to thrive. Therefore, 2020 will be my year to focus on blending and coordinating these two parts into a compatible whole.
